So with the page that was just spoiled from the new DMG that is coming soon Ive been considering how to build a decent necromancer in 5th edition. The new page gives us the Death Domain for Clerics which is really neat since it give us some cool necrotic damage Channel Divinity options as well as access to Animate Dead at level 5 as a Domain Spell. Oathbreaker Paladin also give us access to Control Undead at level 3. As opposed to level 14 as a School of Necromancy Wizard. I also happened to notice an interesting thing that I seem to have overlooked thus far. Arcane spell failure is gone. If you have proficiency in type of armor you can cast in that armor. So Im thinking first three levels as a Paladin choosing Oath of the Ancients as it seems to be the easier one to lead in flavor wise. Between levels 3 and 4 drop the oath to change to an Oathbreaker Paladin and take the 4th level as a Cleric of Wee Jas. This gives access to the Death Domain as well as flavor reason for also multiclassing into Wizard. Also, since Wee Jas is a Lawful Neutral deity you can maintain a non-evil alignment along the way. Granted the Oathbreaker Paladin implies evil alignment and in fact the atonement section says you have to shed your evil alignment, lets take a look at the first sentence for Oathbreaker. An Oathbreaker is a paladin who breaks his or her sacred oaths to pursue some dark ambition or serve and evil power. Oath of the Ancients reads: The Oath o f the Ancients is as old as the race o f elves and the rituals o f the druids. Sometimes called fey knights, green knights, or horned knights, paladins who swear this oath cast their lot with the side o f the light in the cosmic struggle against darkness because they love the beautiful and life-giving things o f the world, not necessarily because they believe in principles of honor, courage, and justice. So pursuing necromancy would certainly be a dark ambition that would break the oath while not becoming evil. Allowing you to go from an LG Paladin to an LN Cleric of Wee Jas focusing on Necromancy leading into Wizard Necromancer.
