So would it be possible to put a cable offshore, maybe hybrid coax/fiber optic, that will allow Lower Puna to stay connected in the event of the lava continuously going into the ocean? The cable would have to be underwater to avoid to obvious lava boat traffic that will be coming but maybe moored so that it would stand-off the bottom where the lava could breach it underwater. The cable would need some buoyancy so it could stand-off the bottom, attach the kind of relatively inexpensive beacons that pings a satellite if it reaches the surface (I believe they use those when tagging things like sharks, whales for monitoring). That way if theres burn-through on the mooring they would know that the cable is near/at the surface. Also with all the previous talk of putting an undersea cable from Puna to Oahu to power Honolulu with Geothermal, maybe a pilot project that connects Lower Puna to Hilo side with something similar for power in/out?
