So...yall wanted to know how I got roped into setting out the march with our Scholars on the last day. Well...heres how the story goes: Earlier in the day, before our final session of EDGE began, we were having casual conversation with our Scholars at which point one states: Mr. Coleman, they told us that today the Que Dogs were gonna do a step for us. Me: Saywhatnow? Them: Yep. Thats what they tole us. *Sidenote: I have a sneaking suspiscion that they = Cynthia Rochez and her LS/Assistant Principal but I digress....* Me: Tell yall what. If you are good for the rest of the day, handle your business, and we dont have any problems, the Ques will set the march out for yall since its the last day. *Sidenote v. 2: I didnt say me. I said the Ques of which I am a part, but certainly lawyer-proofed my statement as to not obligate myself but yes, to oligate someone younger than me in the fold. #protocol...get you some. Them: Ok. We wanna see it. ***FAST FORWARD*** Its the end of the day. We have dismissed our Scholars from the groove for the final session. Here comes Lavar (the young man with whom I had the earlier conversation). Ummmm excuse me, excuse me, attention, attention, the Scholars have an annoucement! Naturally, we all quiet down. At which point I was reminded about my promise to the students. Yall remember that tho? Yep. Yall dont wanna see that. Yall ready to leave, right? Nope. Well wait. Ok. No problem, right? So I turn to a certain 2009 Morehouse Man Psi Chapter bruh who is a deuce who hangs with Jay Obaze and shall remain nameless and tell him.... young bruh...you the youngest bruh here....go set the march out. Do you know what he says to me? Nah. Huh? Nah. I aint doin it. Wow. #protocol right? Or nah? So then I had a decision to make. Mind you, I asked (yes, Im tagging ALL Yall who LEFT ME HANGING) Jelani Watkins, D. Fails, Amir Shareef, Skip Victor to help me set the march out. Not. a. one. came. #isthereone? #wontyoucomenow? At that point, I had a decision to make. I could not keep my word to these Scholars on something which, in the grand scheme of things may have proven to be very small. See, Im not the hopping bruhs. Sometimes I forget what Sleepy Harris always reminds me that Im a solo and because of that, with no lbs around, if I mess up, who cares? or, who notices? But, in that moment, I realized that I would then be guilty of the very same thing that I and so many of our valued EDGE Mentors have talked to them about ie, facing your fears, having confidence, and trying even when you arent sure you will be successful. So, I decided to do it. By myself. I may have messed up on parts, but I worked it in clean and, to the uninitiated, you wont catch it. Shoot, to the non-marching bruhs, YOU wont catch it. E on fleek. Moral of the story: what fears are keeping you from setting owt the march in your own life. You never get too old to take some of your own advice and have the courage to not just face them head on, but push past them. And now I present to you....the march. Empower. Develop. Grow.
