So yesterday this happened.... My husband left early in the morning for synagogue, like every Shabbat morning, leaving me home alone with our three kids. At 8am I felt a little nauseous, but continued playing Monopoly and trying to ignore it. By 9am I had over 102 fever and was unable to move. Laying in my bed and barely able to open my eyes, I was so worried about what I will do with my kids for the next three hours. It was Shabbat, so I couldnt use the phone, television, car, or any other electronics. I mustered all of my strength, and called out my window to my 80 year old neighbor, Yudit, who was sitting on her porch. Immediately she came over, dressed and fed my 2 year old, and took my baby back to her house. Yudit watched my two older kids walk to their friends houses and totally took control. For the past two days I have had friends and neighbors bringing me tea, offering to watch the kids, bring me movies, and do anything else that I need. Thank God, He is a healer and I am feeling so much better. But there is nothing more calming, beautiful, and holy than living in a community that cares about you, helps you, and is always there for you. And that is how it is everywhere in Israel. I was raised in Chicago on the saying never talk to strangers....I raise my kids with the opposite saying, if you ever need anything, ask the person next to you. There is a verse in the Talmud that all of the people of Israel are responsible for one another - its so amazing to know that these words are alive!
