So you have the Pick n Mix Festival and they offer theatre - TopicsExpress

So you have the Pick n Mix Festival and they offer theatre companies the chance to perform shows at The MAC without the cost of hiring the venue. Lots of companies jumped at this chance as, well, wed all like to be wildly overpaid for this sort of carry on but doing a play for [kind of] nothing is better than doing nothing for nothing. The Arts Council currently appear to have a system in place where a show is either funded or it is not. Crucially this tends to decide whether the show exists or not. This is rather silly. When a show is funded a large slice of that goes to the venue. Can the Arts Council not liaise with venues like The MAC and themselves hire out, say, their Upstairs venue for say 12 nights. Can The MAC not then offer up that space to three theatre companies say, for say three 4 night runs scattered across the year and then the Arts Council at least have contributed to the biggest arseache for small-scale theatre companies and that is the expense of hiring out somewhere to put these darned shows on? These companies can then stick the Arts Council Funded badge on their websites and the social media which reassures swing voters the show is not a crock of shit and we have more shows from companies not given the tens of thousands of pounds given to the larger companies. They can at least split the honey pot of ticket sales after and everyone involved can be a little less concerned about bills and such.
