So you know that kid, the one youve prejudged; the one you think is a thug. Because he wears a hoodie, always has music blasting out of his earphones, and looks intimidating because he never smiles. The one that makes you cross to the other side of the street when youre walking, or clutch your purse tighter, or lock your car doors. He rarely smiles because he may not have a lot to smile about; because hes been through a lot in his short life-stuff you probably couldnt even imagine. Well that kid comes to school everyday. He has a 95 in chemistry. He frequently asks what he can do to improve his average or if I give out extra credit. He may not smile at you, but he smiles when I hand back tests and anonymously commend the student who got 110%, because its him. He doesnt care what you or I think of him; he doesnt care that statistics have tried to predetermine that he will live at or below the poverty level if he even makes it to 21. He is so focused and so driven so intrinsically motivated that he doesnt see us. He only sees his name on a brass name plate sitting on a big mahogany desk in a fancy office. He keeps me going when my job gets really tough. I will see him again in about 20 years when I go to the bank to take out a loan for my Benz coupe (because my kids will be grown by then and I can actually drive a car again). I will peek my head in his office just to say hi #screwyourstatistics
