So you must be fearful of raising a black man in America now that you have a son. My response to this statement, will always be a resounding NO! Raising a black male child does not invoke any feeling of fear or apprehension. I am honored. I intend to be able to see my son for who he is. Fear will blind me and steer me towards recklessness. In these moments I am guaranteed to miss an opportunity to impart wisdom and to reinforce love. Fear creates hostility and causes the ego to rise. He will not be socialized to adapt a fear based mentality, to be translated into an excuse later. We have countless examples of the outcome when fear is a reflexive reaction. My truth is beyond fear. My truth reminds me that fear and love cannot occupy the same space. -- Rashida Spence Ingram
