So you think WalMart has low prices? Thats because you havent thought it through. WalMart pays wages as low as possible to maximize shareholder value - that is what corporations exist for. It isnt enough for employees to live on, but WalMart and other low-wage employers have taken care of that - they support the government providing food stamps, health care subsidized or even free for children of their employees, low-cost housing, and of course the federal Earned Income Credit. At they same time they lobby for lower corporate income taxes, and relief or rebates on local property taxes and sales taxes. It is estimated that taxpayers subsidize the employees of each WalMart store to the tune of about $900,000 per year - paid for by you the taxpayer, of course. And one more reason for them to keep wages so low - minimum wage employees have to shop at WalMart and eat at Mickey Ds, because they cant afford Old Navy or Applebys. Sort of the inverse of Henry Fords decision to pay his workers enough that they could afford to buy a Ford...
