So you want to learn how to grow for show..... Heres your chance! We are at 33 weeks until the AVSA Convention show in Kansas City (May 25-30, 2015). If you were going to take a show plant, you should be doing the following right now: 1) Keep an eye on varieties of violets and Gesneriads which might be good to work on for show. They should be healthy and mature enough to bloom, have good closed growth habit, and have a heavy bloom habit. It helps if it has a show reputation... in other words, has done well in other shows or is from a hybridizer known for breeding show plants. 2) Repot into fresh soil and, if you wish, begin disbudding/grooming (non-stop until March) to achieve large plants. 3) At the very least, set aside selected plants in a “show growing location” (probably under fluorescent lights) and maintain good care and handling. Setting them aside helps you remember that these plants are special. Try to choose a much larger number than you actually plan to try to exhibit. You will eliminate most of them by May 25. 4)Verify now that the variety is blooming true to its description.
