So, youve heard about two Japanese and one Japanese-American just won Nobel Prize in physics, right? What you havent heard, if you are not from Japan, is that one of them ditched Japanese citizenship, because Japanese corporations dont know how to reward/compensate for amazing discoveries engineers make. Dr. Nakamura, now American, In 2001, sued his former employer Nichia over his bonus for the LED discovery, which was originally ¥20,000 (≈US$180). Although Nakamura originally won an appeal for ¥20 billion (≈US$180 million), Nichia appealed the award and the parties settled in 2005 for ¥840 million (≈US$9 million), at the time the largest bonus ever paid by a Japanese company. I would say, go Dr. Nakamura. But what? $180 bonus? Come on, Japan, wake up.
