Soap Box. // I will say it again, since someone read one of my grumpy status updates cross-posted to Twitter and got upset: (1) the amount of publicity you receive does not make you a good writer; (2) the sales figures of your books do not make you a good writer; (3) whether your work appears in the Big 6, the slick magazine set, or the hard-to-publish-in A-list journals does not make you a good writer; (4) publishing a lot of books does not make you a good writer; (5) having an agent, a publicist, and / or someone to pick off your body lice does not make you a good writer; (6) being James Franco does not make you a good writer; (7) making a living off your writing such that you can thumb your nose at mom for telling you to go into nursing does not make you a good writer. What makes you a good writer is if you can move others with your writing, if you have learned your craft enough to use it with an appreciable degree of skill, and if you are satisfied with your writing in itself--not as a means to get or avoid something else in life. // Okay, I will stop with the soap-boxy pontification now.
