Soapbox moment: Just been reading the latest PISA report and you have wonder why the UK, US & other similar nations have remained flat in the development of student outcomes. Before I share my opinion, why does this measure mater. Simply put its the strongest indicator of long term economic growth, the nation with the smartest kids will generate the highest the GDP once they enter the job market. So, what is going wrong? IMHO it comes down to culture and policitics. By the age of 15 a Chinese or Korean child is about 2-years ahead of their UK/US equivalent - that requires a work ethic and imperative that doesnt exist amongst our average family. Political intervention in education in our democracies is simply about winning votes and not long term educational development - a period of stability will improve outcomes. But how can you justify yourself to the electorate by doing nothing! Anyway, things dont look rosy for our future. I hope the girls the learn Chinese or Korean!
