Social Evening Had dinner with friends at The Social last night followed by drinks and live music at Liquid Volume. Havent been to The Social since two or three owners ago but it will be in our rotation going forward. I wouldnt put it at the level of our favorite DTLA destinations, but we were pleasantly surprised. My wife had crab cakes and liked them a lot. I had French Onion soup followed by Osso Buco. Traditionally served with risotto ala Milanese, they broke the tradition only slightly with a mushroom risotto. The meat was tender and tasty. Lightly sauced and served with a pic to retrieve the shank marrow. The Social is known for its extensive martini selection. I opted for what is traditionally called a Rusty Nail .. Scotch splashed with Drambuie, a scotch based liqueur. They served it martini style and used Scotch from the Laphroaig distillery and dubbed it Frog Legs or something. It was very good. After dinner, we headed over to Liquid Volume to catch the live music and sample the bar fare. The band was playing classic rock covers. The space is where All Corked Up used to be. The bar looks mostly unaltered, they knocked out a wall, threw some draping on the walls and called it a day. Not a bad space to take in a live show. Generous pours and a few specialty cocktails. They also have a fairly full menu of appetizers and main dishes. We didnt try anything as we had already had dinner. Not sure I would want to eat there but may try it just to give it a chance. Overall, a nice evening.
