Social Services Department. is accepting applications to fill vacancies in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara. We are also establishing a list to fill any future vacancies in Lompoc. The current vacancies are in Social Services Department. Ideal Candidate Will Possess: • Excellent customer service skills • Works well independently • Strong written and verbal communication • Performs well in a variety of situations and conditions and responds accordingly • Ability to use good judgment in prioritizing tasks • Good organizational skills Examples of Duties: 1. Collects, weighs, meters, and pre-sorts first class, registered, and certified mail; delivers and distributes in-coming and out-going mail; provides shipping and receiving of United Parcel Service mail; following a prescribed route, provides courier services for furniture, equipment, medical supplies and items, records/files, and mail between department facilities using a car, light truck, or van; may occasionally transport departmental staff to sites in the county. Orders, receives, unloads, inspects, returns, shelves, packs, and labels supplies and equipment; rotates, issues, and delivers requisitioned stock; prints large volumes of forms and assembles packets; using a computer, enters data to maintain a record of supplies, equipment, and forms; annually performs fixed asset inventories; operates a fork lift to deliver or move supplies and equipment. Responds to requests from staff for building or office repairs; identifies supplies, equipment, and buildings needing maintenance and repairs and notifies supervisor; performs minor supply, equipment, and building repairs; reconfigures office furniture as directed; writes or types work-orders, and materials requisition forms. 4. Lifts, moves and transports heavy and/or bulky furniture and household appliances. 5. Uses computer applications to research information and resources, access and respond to email, compose written correspondence and develop spreadsheets. Employment Standards: 1. One year of experience performing one of the following: mailroom services; courier/delivery services; storekeeping; or shipping and receiving; or, a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Additional Qualifications: Possession of a California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of appointment and must be kept valid throughout the term of employment. Selectees must, as a condition of employment, sign statements agreeing to comply with Section 11166 of the California Penal Code relating to child abuse reporting and Section 15630 of the California Penal Code relating to elder abuse reporting. Knowledge of: basic recordkeeping and arithmetic; safe work and driving practices. Ability to: read and carry out written and oral instructions; learn storeroom and inventory control procedures; learn to make minor building maintenance repairs; access and use personal computer applications in a Windows (or equivalent contemporary operating system) environment; maintain computerized records, reports, and forms; pay attention to detail; learn to operate office equipment and hand tools; learn a variety of routine duties; write simple notes; observe safe work and driving practices; learn to operate fork lift; and maintain good working relationships with staff and the public. Incumbents in some positions may be exposed to a variety of hazardous and/or unpleasant field conditions. Work in some positions may require various types of physical exertion, such as: prolonged bending, stooping and lifting; carrying and moving heavy objects such as refrigerators, sofa beds and appliances over uneven surfaces, such as down staircases and through narrow hallways; lifting heavy items above and below shoulder height; walking, standing, and reaching, sometimes for extended periods. Supplemental Information: Selection Process 1. Review applications to determine those applicants that meet the employment standards. 2. Computerized Competency Assessment. All qualified candidates will be notified on 3/12/14 with instructions for obtaining and taking an online competency assessment. All applicants must complete the assessment in order to advance to the next step in the selection process. 3. Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking. Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates’ final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list. If you waive employment consideration on three separate occasions during the life of this employment list, the Human Resources Department may remove your name from the list. Some department positions are temporary and those candidates who are approved may be contacted for short-term employment opportunities.
