Socialist FAQs. Comments? Q. Isnt a welfare-state better than Socialism? A. No. A welfare system is simply Capitalism with considerable modifications. People are taxed more in order for the government to provide more social services. This is only possible in a rich country where people can afford to pay more taxes. It cannot happen in a poor country like Pakistan where the state has little means to generate revenue. Secondly a welfare state is only possible in a country with a well-developed labor movement which should in any case demand more than a welfare state, i.e., Socialism. But the path of the labor movement often leads to a compromise short of the complete overthrow of Capitalism. Thirdly, it is still Capitalist, which means that it is still exploitative and still prone to economic crises which can throw tens of thousands of people out of jobs, as happened in the case of Iceland and other European economies in 2008.
