Socialist FAQs Q. What are classes in society? A. Classes are socio-economic segments of society that are defined by their relation to business property, i.e., the means of production. Throughout history, there have been many classes. For example, in ancient history, there were slaves and slave-owners. But today, there are workers and capitalists, among other classes. The capitalist’s relation to property is that he will own the machines, the factory, and the final product, and therefore become wealthy by employing workers to perform labor to create the final product. The worker’s relation to property is that he will perform labor for the capitalist hour by hour in the factory, receiving only wages, and in the end, will own nothing and remain poor.
