Socialist International Urges Unconditional Recognition of Palestine GENEVA, December 16, 2014 (WAFA) – Socialist International (SI) urged countries worldwide to unconditionally recognize the State of Palestine and support the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination. The council of the Socialist International, held in Geneva on December 12 - 13, called for the immediate and unconditional recognition of the State of Palestine on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. “Self-determination in an independent Palestine on the 1967 border is a recognized legal right of the Palestinian people,” said the international group in a press release. After more than 20 years of failing to achieve peace through the bilateral peace process, the group stressed that “the time has come for the International community to meet its responsibility under international law to bring an end to the occupation and all impediments to the exercise by the Palestinian people of their right to self-determination.” SI declared support for the upcoming Palestinian bid at the United Nations Security Council to set a two-year deadline to end the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. The group urged a total freeze of settlements activities in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well house demolitions and the deportation of Palestinians which Israeli unlawfully exercises against indigenous residents. It prompted a non-violent approach by all parties and demanded an immediate cessation of all forms of violence by the Israeli army and settlers against the non-violent resistance. Meanwhile, SI called for the immediate lifting of the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip and called for starting the reconstruction of war-weary Gaza. SI expressed its support for diplomatic initiatives in support of Palestinian self-determination, including the resumption of negotiations, calling upon the international community to take urgent action to meet its political, legal and moral responsibility in this regard. palestine.dk/socialist-international-urges-unconditional-recognition-palestine/
