Society has a very linear approach when it comes to calories, so by nature many people judge the success of their workout by calories burned or choose a program that touts large caloric burn. If a device is used to measure caloric expenditure, like a heart rate monitor, consider this. The rate at which the heart beats determines how many calories are used, not a very accurate approach. If you have a low VO2 max ( the bodies ability to uptake and utilize oxygen) by default your heart will have to beat faster to compensate therefore resulting in a high number of calories used. So I challenge you, if you count calories, to learn more about exercise and how it effects our body and not look at exercise as a way to just burn calories. Lets put fitness in the right spotlight for what it really is and not how it has been ruined by commercialism!
