Socrates, Bertrand Russell, Jean Baudrillard, Mao Tse-tung and Jesus meet in a bar to discuss the meaning of Christmas. Socrates says, That God would become a baby could have only be dreamt up in some sort of Greek mythology. No wonder its a nice story. You have to be kidding me, Socrates. Theres no logical proof that Jesus ever existed. Russell says smugly, ignoring Jesus sitting beside him. Its all simulacra. Baudrillard says under his breath. Jesus pauses and says, Great, now Im an illogical nonexistent simulacra myth, but at least Im the reason why retail stores get 40% of their annual sales in the USA. That sounds like capitalism. Baudrillard declares. How so? Socrates asks Isnt capitalism based on the myth that doesnt exist but is suppose to work anyway? Socrates says, And its illogical because everyone lives in it but only 1% benefit from it. But It does exist, at least. Jesus asserts. Yes, but only in that it does not exist. Its a veritable paradox. Russell says proudly. I know that I do not know Socrates says. Now thats a paradox. I am God and I am Man. Jesus says smiling proudly. There is really no original except, of course, that statement. Baudrillard says. Well then, there you go. We can submit our conclusion: Life, like Christmas is all just one big paradox. Socrates says. Noticing that Mao hasnt said anything, they all turn to him and ask, Mao, you have been quiet all this time. What do you think, do you agree with our conclusion? Mao turns to them and says, No, I emphatically do not! as his hand strikes the table. You all might be full of paradoxes, but Capitalism is not paradox, it is a CONTRADICTION! Then how do you explain the Christmas holiday, Mao? Russell asks. Thats easy, Its a capitalist holiday that misinterprets paradox for contradiction. Great Jesus says, so now my life is a paradox, but its celebrated contradictory. Yes Mao says, and we have a word for this. Whats that? Religion. via Creston Davis
