Socrates supposedly said: The only thing that I know, is that I know nothing. Taken seriously, this could mean either that he was an existentialist pessimistic about intersubjectivity, or that he was a positivist who embraced nihilism. But the people who seem to love this quote usually take it to mean something antithetical to either: As a general dismissal of the *possibility* of knowledge in general. But Socrates is never credited with saying: Knowledge is impossible or even I dont know anything; to his credit, because both of these are just versions of the Liar Paradox. Which, as a statement about human knowledge in general, would be self-refuting, sterile, and shallow. Oscar Wilde once wrote: All great thinkers have their disciples, and each of the latter are Judas. I think Socrates and Wilde knew many fairly profound things, and wisely expressed them as parables.
