Sofia Samatar doesnt make sense to me in this essay. I think an answer to Okris call for mental freedom of the African writer lies in the establishment of African multinational publishing houses, conferences, book fairs which will enable African writers to speak the way they want, not how whites want. The next is establishment of literary prizes, fellowships worthy of their names. The internet has a way of ensuring that freedom, perhaps, since it reaches farther than the book. I really understand and agree with Okri. I will however add that no university in the West, as far as I am concerned, can teach African literature better than an African university because here, noboby draws up a map for you, or tells you what he feels you need to know about yourself. African literature in Africa is taught wholistically in a way that it speaks to us in the language we understand. But Sofia does not seem to know this.
