Soft Addiction This addiction to sugar, a national epidemic, - TopicsExpress

Soft Addiction This addiction to sugar, a national epidemic, just doesnt seem to concern us. I call it a soft addiction, because many of us just dont care and/or dont believe it to be a problem. Most of us are in denial. We tend to rationalize personal health as; if its not broken dont fix it, and if it requires a little effort, forget it. Additionally, the human species tends to wait until its almost too late before we do something about a bad situation. Take a look at our history. Maybe, if we will just look at todays statistics, we might begin to wake up. We might begin to see where we are, and where we are headed. The government has labeled obesity as a disease. A simple calculation of weight and height determines if we are obese. The medical community is now paying attention to Syndrome X. Each end of the X refers to a disease: hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes. These four diseases appear to be interrelated. All of which center around sugar. We know how we became obese, excess sugar. Now the question is, can we do something about it? If we want to do something about our weight then we should do a little soul searching. Are we happy with the way we look, and are we free of Syndrome X symptoms? If the truthful answer is no, then are we willing to consider a change in our lifestyle? Most of us would probably say no to change, because of human nature again. But, if we found a practical way to address this issue and decided that we wanted to look and feel better, we would find lots options. But, be wise. America, the land of opportunity, offers thousands of choices; pills, fad diets, shots, mind control, various exercises, hundreds of liquid concoctions and the list goes on. This fact alone bares truth to the epidemic and that most of us dont care. If sugar is the prime ingredient in Syndrome X, then maybe we need to look at our food consumption differently. One hundred years ago we viewed food as a basis of survival. Today, we view food as means of satisfaction. This transition has opened the door for major food manufactures to figure out how to sell more food. What can they do to make us want more of their product? Just add sugar. So what can we do about it? We need to use our intelligence and acknowledge our current state of affairs. Then perhaps, we can start thinking about food and what we eat differently. When we feel hungry, we subconsciously want to satisfy our craving quickly and easily. Perhaps, we should start to look at food as either our cure or our poison. What we put in our mouths can effect our physical and emotional feelings almost instantly (like a drug). Maybe we should think of food as a drug. Do we want to eat for health or eat for pleasure? Fundamentally, this way of thinking may be an answer. Realistically, it may be impossible. Food for thought:) For those of us who do want to address the sugar epidemic and change, there is a proven protocol that more than 8 million people have benefited from. This program teaches us the basic processes and outcomes by which our bodies digest different types food. This empowering knowledge is critical and will help us understand and change our eating habits. Exercise is not the key to weight loss but it is important for long term weight and health management. Knowledge is power and the more we learn the better we can fight this addiction. Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food. Will D. Rhame author/coach
