Soldier of the Day: Captain David Rhine, Quartermaster. In civilian life a merchant, Rhine was one of two native-born Germans to serve in the 16th Texas Cavalry, and to date, the only known Jew. Rhine, along with several of his brothers, helped to run "Rhine Brothers," a merchant operation with various locations throughout the United States. Rhine enlisted in 1862, and served throughout the war as Quartermaster, with a brief interruption in that office on the orders of Colonel Fitzhugh. After the war, Rhine moved from McKinney to Bonham, where he operated a local dry goods store. He built a grand house on the site of what had been the old Confederate hospital. The house was sadly lost in a fire, but the foundations can still be seen. findagrave/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=121&GSvcid=332047&GRid=46779578&
