Soldiers and civilian members of U.S. Army North celebrated the 72nd birthday of U.S. Fifth Army today. Fifth Army was activated on 5 Jan. 5, 1943 at Oujda, French Morocco. During World War II nearly 20,000 Fifth Army Soldiers would die as the Army fought its way up the Italian peninsula. In 2004, Fifth Army, which had moved to Fort Sam Houston in 1971, was redesigned as U.S. Army North and became responsible for homeland defense and Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA).
