Soldiers for God Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. (Ephesians 6:11) WHEN this verse was written, Rome was in power, and military power and strategy and apparel was a subject well known in that day. So describing the Christians life in military language would be readily understood. From our verse comparing Christians to soldiers, we note the protection for the soldiers, the performance of the soldiers, and the peril for the soldiers. Protection for the soldiers. Put on the whole armor of God. In order to be protected in battle, soldiers in the day of Rome wore considerable armor. This armor is detailed piece by piece in verses that follow our verse. This armor was often heavy and cumbersome to wear and would be restrictive in ones movements. But the wise soldier never argued about the inconvenience of the armor. He knew it could be the difference between life and death in battle. Spiritually many complain about the armor saints must wear. Many complain that it is too restrictive not to go to certain places or associate with different people and to wear modest clothes which cover a person up in the summer is just too cumbersome. But these things like the armor of a soldier are only for your protection. Do not despise them; they will protect you from deadly blows by the enemy. Performance of the soldiers. Stand against the wiles of the devil. Gods people are to stand against evil, not compromise with it or negotiate with it. There is much evil out there in our world today. Take a strong stand against it. That will not be popular, but it will purify. One of the problems of our churches today is their failure to take a strong stand against the evils of our day. That is disobedience, for God says to stand against the wiles of the devil. Peril for the soldiers. Wiles means that which is deceitful and tricky. Evil is crafty. Sin does not advertise itself honestly. It pictures itself as attractive and beneficial. But in truth it is ugly and deadly. Sin tells us how much fun it is, but in truth sin brings great sorrow instead. John G. Butler
