Free Mulch give-away Due to an excess supply of mulch, Fayetteville residents may receive free mulch during the month of September during normal operating hours at the City’s Compost Facility located at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. in southeast Fayetteville. The mulch will be given away for free until supplies are exhausted and may be acquired in truck-bed/trailer amounts or residents can bring their own containers or bags for loading. The facility hours are 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the site will also be open on Saturday, September 7th and Saturday, September 14th , from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The mulch is made from ground-up trees and is great for moisture retention around plants. The mulch is made from trees collected through the City’s Yardwaste Program and trees dropped off at the Composting site. Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. The City of Fayetteville, in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful, has recently begun a cigarette litter prevention program in the Dickson Street area. This program is designed not only to prevent cigarette litter but also to identify where and why cigarette litter takes place. With the help of a $1,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful, Fayetteville installed new ash receptacles on Dickson Street to accompany the existing 33 pole mount receptacles currently in place. The grant also provides for distribution of ash trays to downtown businesses, and conducting education and outreach activities to raise awareness about cigarette litter. This education campaign will bolster Fayetteville’s existing efforts, which include twice-weekly cigarette litter cleanups as well as maintaining several dozen ash receptacles in the downtown area. Compost Facility Hours. The City’s Compost Facility at 1708 S. Armstrong Ave. is open during normal operating hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The site will also be opened Saturday, September 7th and Saturday, September 14th from 8 am to noon. Residents of Fayetteville are allowed to drop off brush, leaves or grass during these hours but need to bring a recent water bill showing solid waste charges and proof of residency to drop off yard waste for free. Commercial landscapers and contractors are allowed to use the site for drop off purposes and normal fees apply. Compost Distribution. Screened compost is currently available. Only Fayetteville residents are allowed to purchase the compost and must show proof of residency through their water bill. No commercial customers or apartments are allowed to receive compost. Please bring a copy of a recent water bill showing solid waste charges for proof of residency. Residents will only be allowed to purchase one scoop for $20 plus tax when the compost is available. One scoop is approximately 2 ½ cubic yards or enough to fill the bed of a regular size pick-up truck. Limiting to one scoop allows a chance for most residents to purchase the compost should they desire. Compost is also available in bags for those residents that do not have access to a truck or trailer. The bags are $4 plus tax and weigh approximately 50 lbs. If 10 or more bags are desired please call ahead so the bags can be prepared in advance. Please call 575-8398 for confirming 10 or more bags. Mulch Distribution. Mulch will be made available during normal operating hours (see above) while supplies last. The fee for mulch is $10 per scoop (2 1/2 cubic yards) and is available to anyone. Transfer Station Hours. The City’s Transfer Station for the disposal of solid waste is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., excluding holidays. The fees for disposal are $42.55 per ton, $27.10 minimum, or $6 per bag plus tax. Recycling Drop Off on S. Happy Hollow. The Solid Waste and Recycling Division operates a recycling drop off center located just off 15th St. on S. Happy Hollow. The site is open 24 hours a day / 7 days a week to provide convenient recycling options. Volunteer groups are being sought to work a few hours on Saturdays to clean the site and provide education to those wishing to recycle. Please contact Brian Pugh at 718-7685 or [email protected] for more information. Postponing Plastic #3 through #7 collection Due to a lack of recycling markets, the City will no longer be accepting plastic bottles and containers marked #3 through #7 at the Recycling drop off facility. The market that was being used previously for recycling of these plastics has closed. When two or more domestic markets that can account for the recycling of these plastics can be utilized, the program will be reinstated. Please do not place #3 through #7 plastics into the other recycling containers at the recycling drop off.
