Solidarity Action w/ Our Local Fasters On Sunday, August 4th, Tarak Kauff, and I will be joining the Muslim Community of As Salam Mosque (Albany, NY) to end our long-term fasts in support of the Striking prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. I will be in my 80th Day and Tarak will be on Day 59. We are very happy to be breaking our Hunger Strike in a Mosque at the Iftar meal (the daily breaking of fast during Ramadan), and we feel this is a publicly visible way of accepting the love, the warmth, and the open arms of the Muslim community. While many of our friends will be joining us in Albany for this important moment, others cannot. We are asking that you be in solidarity with us by going to a Mosque (a masjed) close to you, and attending the Iftar fast breaking in your local community (approximately 8:15 PM on Sunday, 4 Aug 2013). You can find a masjed (a Mosque) at findmymasjed/ . Not all masjed have an Iftar dinner, so you are encouraged to call the masjed before going. They will advise you what time you should arrive. The mosjed As Salam, where we will be breaking our fast, has offered to call your local mosque to open up the exchange. However, it will be an important witness to join with two Veterans, one a Christian and one a Jew, who are both opposed to war, torture, forced feeding, and indefinite detention, and who will be breaking bread with our Muslim brothers and sisters. We want to end the racist stereotyping attacks on peoples of the Islamic faith, and to send a message to the Muslim prisoners in Guantanamo whose rights are being denied, even during this holy season of Ramadan.
