Solitude, Sometimes, a golf course can be the loneliest place in the world. Even when youre in the heat of battle, flanked by members of your Saturday morning shootout, its all about you. Only you can decide when to pull out that 9-iron instead of the 8 and when to fire at the pin rather that the meat of the green. Only you feel the true despair of missing that putt on the last hole and letting victory for the team slip through your fingers. Only you. Of course, the chance to be alone-if not in body, certainly in mind-is one of the inherent virtues of the game. No other sport lends itself to solitude like golf. Indeed, golf and golf courses are havens from the outside world, refuges where you can reflect on life and get real with yourself. No other sport offers that.
