Solwezi Destitution Worries JCTR The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) says that the destitution around the mining town of Solwezi shows that the giant mining firms have done little to help the locals in the areas they operate. JCTR Executive Director Father Leonard Chiti said despite mining firms posturing that they had done a lot for the locals there was little to suggest that the people were any better than they were before the mining firms came into North Western Province. He said although the mines were raking millions of dollars they did not invest part of the money in improving the lives of the locals. “If you move around and look at the infrastructure and look at the living conditions of the people, if you talk to people you would not believe that there are two big mines that are earning this country a lot of money,” he said. “In other words, those of us who go into communities and talk to people and seeing what Solwezi looks like, we have not seen anything that suggests that people are much better off compared to what they were five years ago or 10 years ago.” zambiareports/2014/07/21/solwezi-destitution-worries-jctr/
