Thanks! ------ Regardless of the outcome of today’s rally in Taipei, it is inevitable that the next main field of Taiwan’s anti-unification movement will have to migrate to overseas. Before the students’ “Sunflower” movement, it is hard for the overseas Taiwanese to contribute to this movement but now we can make the case that not all Taiwanese people are willing to be ruled by the Chinese, and become the Chinese. After all, if people on the island agree to be submerged into China and be Chinese, even if the US government is kind enough to let us claim our ethnic background as the “Taiwanese,” it will be very hard to argue that we are not the Chinese. In foreseeable future conflict between US and China is nearly inevitable. It is quite likely that the Taiwanese will be considered as the Chinese and be sent to a concentration camp like the Japanese in WWII. Therefore, as a Taiwanese-American, to live happily and comfortably in the US, we are obliged to support the movement in Taiwan. Meanwhile, students and professors involved in the movement may be suppressed in different ways by the KMT government and need to escape from Taiwan. Overseas Taiwanese must lend our helping hands to save them. How to establish a tangible force of the Taiwanese strong enough to influence the US government is an issue that we all need to address. We will need to strengthen the strategic position of Taiwan in US-China relationship. I will argue that this position is cultural. History will prove that what happen in Syria and Ukraine are not as influential as what happens in Taiwan now, because if the US let China’s aggression take advantage in Taiwan, the perverse cultures and values behind it will carry over in Africa, in Southeast Asia, and spread around the world. The consequence is that will the progress of human civilization will be delayed, the world will be in a constant instability. Human beings as a whole will be unable to face the grand challenges of global climate changes, environment pollution and the likes. Why the Chinese cultures and values are a threat? First of all, China “Zhong-Guo” or “Middle Kingdom” means centralized control and is opposite to democracy. The idea of elite leadership by the Chinese Communist Party justifies unfair privilege and corruption of a minority with kinships with the Party leaders. The Chinese does not value intellectual property. They have no sense to treat people equally; the only possible inter-person relationship is master-or-slave. The bright side of the Chinese culture is either being suppressed by the Chinese Communist Party or has no way to survive in their political system.
