Some 30 years ago I wrote a poem about the Russian invasion of Afghanistan and after yaking about it with some vets, they urged me to finish it. So this is it The sky is full with the stillness of funeral air the night is hopeless and loaded with suspicion like a breath of conspiracy Then its too damn late suddenly taken by surprise and held in fierce jaws shaped by Byzantine logic born of a dark Kremlin night Diplomacy needs infantry like insult invites injury someone to point the steel someone to feel its flame cool quick parting of the flesh Holy wars require God on your side everyone a warrior to the last man the last schoolgirl 30 years later the holy warriors are infected by that old time religion shoot the last schoolgirl in the head for wanting to be so damn smart A plague of drones upon them a rain of missiles codenamed hellfire apple pie corporate cowboys fresh with the brightness of capitalism smite them remotely with kindness IEDs need infantry like the poppy loves suffering someone to wear the veil someone to wield the lash in surrender to the will of heaven Holy wars require God on your side and everyone a warrior to the last man the last schoolgirl
