Some 40,000 members of Iraqs Yazidi ethnic and religious minority - TopicsExpress

Some 40,000 members of Iraqs Yazidi ethnic and religious minority group remained trapped Saturday and surrounded by The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) forces on Sinjar Mountain, facing starvation and dehydration. Many women and children, as well as the sick and elderly, have already died on the mountain from hunger and dehydration. They fled to the mountain after IS fighters overran a nearby settlement where they had taken shelter. Kurdish fighters have reportedly opened a road to the mountain, allowing some 5,000 Yazidis to escape to seek refuge with Kurds in northeastern Syria. Earlier Saturday, the US military dropped 72 bundles of supplies with a C-17 and two C-130 cargo planes. Escorted by two F/A-18s from the USS George H W Bush, the cargo planes delivered a total of 28,224 meals and 5,761 litres (1,522 US gallons) of fresh drinking water. Iraq and Turkey are among other nations to have delivered relief aid to those trapped on the mountain.
