Some Ebola Virus Disease facts: While the natural reservoir for Ebola virus has not yet been identified, studies have demonstrated widespread antibody prevalence to Ebola viruses in fruit bats, and therefore may be natural hosts for Ebolavirus. Monkeys have high sensitivity to the virus and a high mortality rate when experimentally infected (only bats have shown infection and virus shedding without clinical signs). Antibodies to the Ebola virus has been found in dogs, but the virus has not. Furthermore, the seropositive dogs were asymptomatic. Swine can be naturally infected with Reston ebolavirus (REBOV); however, unlike the current infection of interest, Zaire ebolavirus (ZEBOV), REBOV is the only member of Filoviridae that has not been associated with disease in humans. There is no evidence that any domestic animals play an active role in the transmission of the disease to humans. Fox Run Equine Center
