Some Great Events Not To Miss: FREE ROSE EVENTS IN SACRAMENTO DURING JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. LEARN TO PRUNE AND TRAIN CLIMBING ROSES WITH STEPHEN SCANNIELLO. The Historic Rose Garden of the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is hosting a series of FREE pruning workshops open to all. Join the volunteers of the Historic Rose Garden for this rare opportunity to learn about heritage roses in an award-winning garden set in a beautiful cemetery that is registered as a National Historic Landscape. The cemetery is located at 1000 Broadway at the intersection of 10th street and Broadway in Sacramento. Parking is available in the parking lot across the street. Here’s a listing of the exciting events over the next month: • January 10th – General cleanup in the Historic Rose Garden Volunteers are invited to work in the garden from 9-3. Lunch is provided. RSVP to the curator, Anita Clevenger, via the website for the Historic Rose Garden: cemeteryrose.org. • January 17th Climbing Roses Pruning Workshop with Stephen Scanniello. Two sessions: 9- 11:30 and 1-3:30. Rain Date: January 18 Bring pruning tools, gloves, and lunch Water, coffee, and tea will be provided. RSVP is not necessary, but would be appreciated. cemeteryrose.org Stephen Scanniello, President of the Heritage Rose Foundation and Curator of the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at New York Botanic Garden will conduct two workshops on pruning and training climbing roses. In these workshops, Stephen will demonstrate basic pruning fundamentals and focus on various types of climbing roses and how they can be grown espaliered on a fence or wall, trained over an arch or arbor, or displayed on a tripod. Attendees will have a hands-on opportunity to practice their pruning skills on some of the many climbing roses in the cemeterys collection. You are invited to stay all day or come to either session. • January 24th Pruning Hybrid Perpetuals, Hybrid Teas and Floribundas. 9 – 11:30 RSVP is not necessary, but would be appreciated.cemeteryrose.org. • January 31st Pruning/studying once-blooming Old Garden Roses. 9 – 11:30 RSVP is not necessary, but would be appreciated. cemeteryrose.org. • February 7th Pruning/studying Teas and Chinas. 9 – 11:30 RSVP is not necessary, but would be appreciated. cemeteryrose.org.
