Some Jax news report Fresh start for Westside High and others that Donations were $2,8xx dollars. My comments to their articles were........ Tax dollars should not have been used to shore up the deceit of the superintendent and the lies that donors were ready to step forward to erase the Forrest Alumni Alma Mater. If the name were changed totally with donations, this would be more widely accepted. The Forrest Alumni, whose numbers were over 30,000 over the 55 years of Forrest High, all didnt vote. But those Alumni who had the opportunity and did vote, choose 94 percent to keep the Forrest High name. The students who are now saying what a good thing the new name might be, should be asked how much they contributed to it. The community tax payers who had the opportunity and did vote, choose 75 percent to keep the Forrest High name. Less than $3,000 dollars have been collected, so there was truly no overwhelming support to change the name. Now that the Forrest High name is gone and the new name affixed at the school on Firestone Rd.. Initially the estimates to change the name amounted to $500,000 dollars. When the donations evaporated and it was announced that public tax dollars were to be used, the estimate was revised to $400,000. When an uproar began on using tax dollars got louder, and virtually no donations showed up, the estimate was guessed again to be well below $400,000. Once a couple of contractors loudly announced that they are doing their work Pro Bono (without pay), the revised estimate is now $252,000 (as if that can be believed). In reality, the full impact will still be nearer or over $500,000 dollars. The bean counters have spread this impact like a shell game over different accounts, and not everything has yet been paid. The real accounting for the name change is not how attractive are the signs or how cute the new mascot, it is how badly damaged the broken public trust has become with superintendent Vitti and this school board. Vitti is the WORST superintendent to have held that title in 55 years, or ever.
