Some Thoughts: This sanctuary exists because there was a huge need for it. We didnt know that when we went looking for that celebratory mule all those years ago. We became aware of the plight of horses and equines as time went by and we went from 3 to 17 critters in just a few months. Home At Last is now its own entity. We may have been there to get it started, but its taken on a life of its own. Many folks have and are helping in a lot of ways to make and keep it a reality. Theres nothing easy about it, but its a pleasure to be about it. That said, something has been on my mind for a few days and I thinks its worth sharing. A lot of the folks that support Home At Last really get it. They know that this place is 100% about the critters. Its about seeing to it these creatures have a home, a place thats theirs. Thats safe and secure. They get that the animals come first and will live the rest of their lives as they were intended to, as much as thats possible for em. Because of the harm thats been done to many of em, they cant just be turned out to make it on their own. They need to be cared for. We try to do that with as little interference to their natural way of going at life as we can. We frame our interactions with them from a belief that theyre not here for us, but here with us. Their lives are important. They deserve respect and consideration. They live here. We also have folks that dont get it. They have ego issues or agendas that follow em through the gate and try to land on this place. That doesnt work out. Had folks withdraw their support, stop making donations, not follow through on their words. They wanted to shape this place to their ends or worse yet, just be troublesome. The peace of this sanctuary is highly valued by us and the critters. Trouble makers are pointed back out onto the highway pretty quickly. What they say or do out there isnt really much of a worry for us as there isnt much we can do with it. The latest rumor were aware of, and there sure might be others we havent heard about, is that were starving all the horses and taking the money to go on luxury cruises. Perfect! Donna gets seasick looking at pictures of the ocean and anyone that knows me at all, knows that Id never get on a cramped up boat with 2000 strangers ever. I dont like being around 20 people even if I know most of em and can leave when I want to. Had folks say some pretty mean and ugly things about us and our friends over the years. Theyve faded away, just wind, and were still here and the herds are still here. Well take care of the critters. Its what we do. Its what needs to be done. A bunch of good folks help us. We surely appreciate that.
