Some Thoughts for the Week “What Do Ministers Do on - TopicsExpress

Some Thoughts for the Week “What Do Ministers Do on Vacation?” I like to prepare for my vacation with a week of VBS (Vacation Bible School). VBS with 50 kids really gets me ready for a vacation. Next, we pack our station wagon. Thanks Bob for welding on the roof the connectors for my new roof rack, more room inside for Lehua our little Rottweiler. Packing the car is a labor of love, Christine and I proved again we have a committed relationship. We left directly after our Sunday morning service heading South at 2:30 or was it 3pm. Driving helps me feel like I am going somewhere on vacation: This trip we drove about five hours to our family farm in Corvallis, OR. Due to a number of events in the life of the church we split our vacation in two. The basic pattern is down and up one week, and then two weeks later down and up again. On this trip down to the farm I was very proud of myself, I refused to work on the tractor, and only slightly damaged the light cover in the farmhouse. We discovered our 30 something 50 gallon water tank under the sink has a leak, after it leaked. Fortunately, the rug soaked up most of the water. On our arrival at the farm, we drove down to our campsite on the Mary’s River and discovered we were the first ones to visit this year. Monday morning was spent clearing the grounds, weed wacking, setting up the tent and making a path through the stinging nettles to the river. By 1pm we were exhausted, we headed up to the studio/shop and almost ran into the combine, we were scolded for driving over the hairy vetch on the side of the field, and escaped as quickly as we could to shower and prepare to visit Christine’s dad who just celebrated his 95th birthday. I thanked God that it was 5 o’clock somewhere. We were welcomed with temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s, gentle morning and cooling evening breezes along the river. We witnessed an incredible full moon on Monday night cast it’s silvery light into the canopy of maple leaves above revealing a galaxy of stars. We enjoyed the sounds of silence, broken only by a distant train whistle and the night birds. The river refreshed us in the heat of the day. I rose at first light, and headed for the tent when the moon and the night lost their hold on me. I read a few books, practiced piano up at the studio/shop, and visited family and friends. We drove back North on Sunday with a new painter’s canvas cover on our roof rack, relaxed, refreshed and welcoming the cooler weather. I woke up last night at 2:30am planning how I will install a new 50 gallon tank under the sink in our studio/shop on our next trip in August, by then the black berries will be ripe!
