St. George Cup competition leaders East Collegians took on Toowoomba Rugby League Minor Premiers Newtown at the Warwick Show Grounds in mid July, with Newtown forward strength seeing them overwhelm to win 16 – 8. Warwick team backs, particularly Mulloy, Canavan & Phelan lost nothing by comparison with their opposite numbers, but Newtown’s forwards Pobar, Burton, Smith & Krog gave their backs added thrust by breaking quickly from hard fought rucks and scrums to merge smoothly in to back line movements. Although front-rowers Meneely and Rushton and second-row McMahon played splendid defensive games, Bell appeared to be the only Warwick forward capable of doing this. East Collegians points came from tries by K. Mulloy & R. Rutledge, and a goal by R. Meneely. East Collegians team – D. Rushton, C. Hobbs, R. Meneely, B. McMahon, M. Reading, A. Bell, C. Ivey, L. Roser, T. Phelan, B. Hall, R. Rutledge, V. Canavan, J. Smith – Reserves: K. Mulloy, D. Seaton. 1964 ...... At the Warwick Showgrounds Collegians finished ahead of Pittsworth 35 – 5 after leading 14 – 5 at the break, and Millmerran defeated Border Rovers 13 – 0. 1974...... April saw the first fixtures of the Warwick Junior Rugby League competition kick off. Meanwhile at Queen’s Park on April 21st, “The Greatest Game of All” lived up to its name when Eastern Suburbs defeated Collegians 27 – 22 in the A Grade fixture. There was never a dull moment as both sides battled for the win, exciting the large crowd with a feast of good football. Five tries were scored from dummy-half position, a suitable comment on the almost impregnable centre field defence. Ross Gooding, Neil Muirhead & Neil Burley for Eastern Suburbs and Lee Collins, Dick Divine & Pat ‘Bumper’ O’Farrell all proved to be devastating tacklers, and along with Bunch & Len Doyle, tackled themselves into the dust. For Eastern Suburbs Garry Wilson (2), Brian Blowes, Mike Keim, Neil Burley, Snider Mercy, & Ross Gooding scored tries, Russell King kicking three goals. For Collegians John Kelly, Gerry Nolan, John Matthews, Len Doyle, crossed for tries, Doyle kicking five goals. 1984...... July 16th was a great day of footy for the Eastern Suburbs ‘Hornets’ as they proved too sharp for Stanthorpe winning 24 – 8 at Father Ranger Oval. While the match was marred by a lot of dropped ball & penalties, ‘Hornets’ second-rower Warren Croft was the star for his side. However, Suburbs Coach Ray Bowman was far from happy with his team’s effort, “we didn’t win enough ball, we didn’t back up, our positional play was bad & we didn’t put the man on the ground”. Best for Stanthorpe were Jim Hindmarsh, Rex Battersby & Mick Hodgson. Meanwhile ‘Hornets’ reserve grade coach Ian Morton was delighted with his side’s 54 – 0 win over Stanthorpe, the team’s third competition victory on the trot, with Ken Taylor, Gary Lancaster & Paul Cavanagh the best players. Suburbs also took the honours in the Under 16 match, State Under 15 representative Norm Cox, Scott McLennan & Shane Baker scoring tries in their 26 – 12 success. 1994..... On the representative footy scene Basil Nolan debuted for the Toowoomba ‘Clydesdales’ joining Wattles second-rower Dallas Webcke as the two Southern Downs faces in the side, along with former Warwick & Wattles forward Brad Eyre. All appeared for the ‘Clydesdales’ Seconds against the Gold Coast ‘Seagulls’ Seconds at the Toowoomba Athletic Oval on March 12th. Wattles star centre Vince Ramsay was selected in the ‘Clydesdales’ Firsts team, along with Stanthorpe (former Warwick) back Norm Cox and former Wattles back-rower Ross Murray. Warwick won the 1994 Barrett Family Shield clash against Wattles 36 – 12, the prestigious award presented to Warwick skipper Dayne Barrett by his sister Helen Barrett (now Langford) at Allora’s Tom Cowley Oval. It was a clean sweep of the program for Warwick, also victorious 20 – 12 in reserve grade & 34 – 0 in Under 18. 2004..... Teams and results from the 2004 Barrett Family Shield at Clifton’s Platz Oval, 28th February. The Shield was won by Wattles 24 – 18.
