Some beautiful words by Rev. Papas Vito Borgia. The Greek Catholic Church of Our Lady of Damascus in Valletta is situated in Archbishops Street. A little known fact about the icon of Our Lady of Damascus is that Grand Master Jean de la Valette was a fervent devotee of this Madonna. This old icon was brought to Malta by the Knights on their departure from Rhodes. When on September 7th 1565 the exhausted Turkish army fled to their ships, the heroic Grand Master, followed by the knights and a rejoicing crowd of Maltese, expressed their thanksgiving before this icon. La Valette left his cap and sword on the steps of the altar as a votive offering.
