Some big Californians are really getting around. Researchers tracking elephant seals off the Northern California coast say the animals are international travelers. Two of the seals have been tracked across the international dateline, putting them closer to Russia than to the U.S. Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, say the animals return to the California coast each winter to mate. The San Jose Mercury News reports the animals faced extinction in the late 1800s, but now number more than 225,000. Scott Thackrey
