Some brothers object to scholars who forbid copying the kuffar, even if it be in wearing jeans or their apparels or habits of greeting or walking and its kind. --------------------- Though wearing jeans is not haraam or falls under immitating the kuffar as explained by the muttakkhireen scholars enlisting various reasons, however the point to note here is where did these scholars derive these rulings from? From the sky? They merely read and studied the prophets habit and commandment. For example in one hadeeth, the prophet (s.a.w) is reported to forbid muslims from even using tools to slaughter that were being used by the kuffar specifically. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, Use whatever causes blood to flow, and eat the animals if the name of Allah has been mentioned on slaughtering them. Do not slaughter with teeth or fingernails and I will tell you why: It is because teeth are bones (i.e. cannot cut properly) and fingernails are the tools used by the Ethiopians (whom we should not imitate for they are infidels). [Ref: Saheeh Bukhaari] another hadeeth says Ibn `Abbās relates: People of the Book used to let their hair fall (on their foreheads) and the polytheists used to part their hair. Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) liked to conform his behaviour to that of the People of the Book in matters in which he received no command from Allah ; so he let his hair fall his hair upon his forehead (opposing the mushrikeen). Afterwards, he began to part it [1] . [Sahīh al-Bukhārī and Sahīh Muslim] [1] this last statement , showing how the prophet reverted back , precisely is taken as an usool by the `ulema in declaring something as mubah (permissible) which is no longer a custom specific to the kuffar. Example jeans or its kind. So among the wordly customs (and not religious) if the kuffar are known to practise something specific , then we (Muslims) should avoid it . But when that very custom is no longer a custom among them, such as parting the hair as shown above, then we can adopt it but provided such adoption does not contradict an already existing sunnah of the muslims or of the prophet So when it comes to walking, greeting, even washing our private parts, salman farsi radhiallahu `anhu, when mocked by a mushriq asking : huh does your prophet even teach you how to clean? to which salman farsi r.a PROUDLY BOASTED saying : yes he does.... so when you dont have a prophetic sunnah to copy, see to whats the custom of the Muslims in your nation is and follow that. Stick to the jama`ah in such things for ibn Mas`ood (radhiallahu `anhu) said : differing is evil (except when legislated and demanded by shar`iah)
