Some cardiologists are doing a study and they are hoping for some - TopicsExpress

Some cardiologists are doing a study and they are hoping for some feedback from patients. They are developing a decision aid to help patients choose between a drug eluting stent (DES) and bare metal stent (BMS). (Please note, this is not about *whether* to have a stent -- that would be a separate decision.) There are differences in costs, how long one has to take Plavix after getting the stent, risk of restenosis (stent narrowing), risk of bleeding, etc. If you can look at the decision aids and provide your comments to Dr. Adnan Chhatriwalla, [email protected], that would be awesome. Here is his description of the project. I am an interventional cardiologist at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, MO, and I am a co-investigator for a study that has been funded by the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The study is named DECIDE-PCI and the goals of our study are to: 1. Create a decision aid with respect to stent selection (drug eluting vs bare metal stents) for patients undergoing stenting procedures (percutaneous coronary intervention, PCI) 2. Implement the decision aid at two hospitals 3. Investigate whether use of the decision aid (and accompanying education) improves patient comprehension and satisfaction 4. Investigate any impact on stent type received We are in the preliminary phase of this study, and are engaging patients through focus groups, to better understand the factors most important to patients with respect to stent selection, for example risk of restenosis (stent renarrowing), medication adherence, medication cost, etc. A second important question regards data framing: how do patients prefer data to be presented? (The same fact can be presented positively or negatively: 5% risk of the problem returning, or 95% chance of long-term success. Which would patients prefer?) Answering these questions will allow us to design the decision aid in a way that makes the most sense to patients.
