Some children develop interests that can quickly go out of control, e.g. making collections of things. Rather than letting that one thing consume all their energies, try setting clear and consistent limits on it. E.g. limit how long they can do the activity for, how many of that thing they can collect, etc. Setting a clear expectation at the outset may be less upsetting than trying to impose an ad hoc limit each time.
