Some comments on a post got me thinking. If other animals, particularly other apes exhibited traits which indicated they possessed a sense of the sublime, what might that mean with regard to the religious beliefs of humans? If another ape has an appreciation for the abstract notions like beauty of a waterfall, or empathy for others, or even appears to observe reverence at an event, such as the death of a fellow ape, what does that say about the possible origins of human religious beliefs? Is it possible that religious belief, or the capacity for it, arose as a consequence of a brain capable of imagination?
