Some conservative Hindu groups in Tamil Nadu have burned copies of Tamil author Perumal Murugans books. Perumal Murugan is also a professor. The author-professor had been receiving threatening calls for some time from unknown callers. Though he had approached the police for protection, he got so fed up of this harassment that he has asked all his books to be withdrawn from print. First off: this is NOT a suppression of free speech. It would be if his books were declared illegal by the government or its representatives (there is somwthing to be said for the chilling effects of violence and threats by private , but that is a more academic discussion) Second, and I cannot say this often enough, to Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Bahais, atheists - anyone: if you do not like something, dont read it or look at it. This burning-shurning business is very primitive. Not that I expect the foot soldier types of these conservative groups to be literate or patient enough to read a novel, but still... Third: no religion is so weak that it cannot stand unfazed by a few books or drawings. Stop hiding your own insecurities behind a religious screen.
