Some days back the news of the paralyzed man appeared in the TOI, who was able to walk after a record breaking and pioneer treatment using cells from his nasal cavity (olfactory lobes’ en - sheathing cells that aids smelling power) in his spinal cord. Darek Fidyka, 40, was paralyzed in a repeated knife stab in 2010.Though, he is aided by a walker frame, it shall take time to rehabilitate through physiotherapy. Said to be the first such breakthrough, done in Poland by Polish surgeons assisted by British scientists. More info on this great research is given in the journal Cell Transplantation. Its a marvelous discovery in the field of Neural Regeneration. During initial two operations, surgeons removed one of the patients olfactory bulbs and grew it in culture. Olfactory lobes en - sheathing cells (OEC) are the neural pathways which are continually under renewal. Due to this it was believed that the OECs would provide a pathway for enhancing the sensation to enable fires above and below the injury to reconnect, using the nerve grafts to fill the void (conduction) in the cord. Quite a number of Army soldiers can be seen at the Queen Mary’s Paraplegic Center Kirkee, Pune, paralyzed in their lower limbs. The very sight of a paraplegic is pathetic and painful. Armed Forces and civil neuro surgeons can make a breakthrough in reinventing & renovating the lives of paraplegics..... Such dynamic approach shall improve the quality and health of this great nation. My cryptic article is dedicated to the Indian Army and its ADGPI – Col AK LALL
