Some differences Ive noticed between life in the states and life here.... (lengthy, sorry) When you get your nice hot shower with great pressure... think of the Powells, we have low pressure, no temperature control and 220 volts if you touch the knob (note to self, dont back up under the faucet....).. When you go to walmart or target for your one-stop-shopping.... think of the Powells, we have to go to 500 places over a period of 2 months to get the things we need (that is only somewhat of an exaggeration...) When you get into your car and tune your radio or adjust your seat... think of the Powells, we get to pile into 50 year old taxis, ride in someones lap, or try not to tumble down the aisle of the bus when we go anywhere.... When you adjust the temperature in your house... think of the Powells, we get to pant next to an open window next to the oscillating fan.... When you brush your teeth with faucet water... think of the Powells, we generally try to avoid amoebas and parasites... When you see your online bill pay has taken care of your utility bills... think of the Powells, we get to spend countless hours waiting in lines at multiple banks to deposit money in random utility accounts... When you put on soft warm clothes from the dryer... think of the Powells, we get to either wear stiff jeans from the line or, since its getting to be rainy season, wait a week for the clothes that fit to dry.... These are just of few of the carnal complaints we make throughout our week. Yet, each time we leave our home and we are confronted with the reality of poverty that is present here, and we are thankful. When we see the homeless laying on dirty sidewalks or hurdled in alleys... we think of the blessing we have in our home. When we see hungry children begging for coins... we think of our provision and our abundance. When we see the fatherless, the abandoned, and the hopeless... we think of our heavenly father who loves us with such great and awesome love. When we see tattered clothes of the glue sniffers washing windows at the intersection... we think of the hope we have in Christ We may do without a lot, but we are not hopeless. We may sacrifice comfort, but we havent earned the right to complain about our hardships. We have a savior who, while we were still sinners, died for us, to reconcile us to the Father. We have a Christ who satisfies, when life does not. We have a friend who is closer than a brother, no matter who has abandoned us. We have joy in an evil world because we have a God who is with us, for us, and who goes before us. Help us share that love here in Bolivia... Support what God is doing through us here and help us reach those who are hurting, hopeless, and bound by their sin and their despair. Think about it.
