Some folks asked about the plantain salve I make. It isnt strictly vegan, as it has beeswax in it. However, I buy my beeswax from a local beekeeper who treats his bees very well. Also, bees are essential pollinators which are under attack by big agro, so I really want to support the folks who help our veggies be pollinated. To make plantain salve: warning: it uses beeswax. Pick lots of plantain leaves-I usually use a clean nylon bag about the size of a plastic grocery bag. Make sure your plantain is unsprayed by chemicals. I pick leaves that grow in my lawn and gardens, and I also get leaves at a local school, as the school board has a strict no chemical policy. I sometimes add some fresh lavender leaves. Chop the leaves and put in a large skillet-I use a cast iron one-and pour organic, extra virgin olive oil over it (I never measure, so Im not sure how much). Cook over low heat for hours, stirring when you think of it. After several hours, the leaves will look black and shriveled and will not crackle when stirred. Strain the oil and discard the leaves. Wipe out the skillet and pour the oil back in. Add a little beeswax to the oil and melt over a low heat. Maybe an ounce for every half cup? Test it by dipping a tiny amount onto a plate to cool and check the texture. It shouldnt be really gooey, but it shouldnt be too hard either. Add more oil if hard, more beeswax if soft. It should be lip balm texture. Pour into small wide mouthed containers and cool. Use on any cut, sore, burn, etc.
