Some folks have a gift for multi-tasking. Some dont. While collecting eggs in the barn, I came upon a black snake in the pen large enough to eat my sole bantam chicken. I stuffed 5 eggs in my pocket so I could capture the snake and transfer him to a small bag. My intention was to release the snake on the far shore of the river that borders my land. Then I figured I might as well get fuel for the tractor while driving across the bridge. I grabbed the gas can. Why not also carry a couple 16 foot boards down the hill for fence repairs? I shifted the gas can to the hand carrying the bagged snake. While bending to pick up the boards, I felt eggs crack in my pocket just as I glimpsed an enormous spider an inch from my hand. I dropped the boards, there gas can and the snake - which immediately escaped and scurried under the woodpile. Amidst the commotion, the little Maltese dog Im fostering freaked and ran back to the house. I unzipped my shorts to escape the feeling of wet yolk running down my leg. I walked back to the house empty-handed, in my boxers, to comfort the pup. Hes asleep on the kitchen floor, Im having another cup of coffee and wondering if I should just hang it up for the day.
