Some friends who recently won a holistic cruise were telling us about talking to a lot of the workers on the ship about their working conditions. Every worker they spoke with solidified the fact that they are being abused. The companies target poor countries to find immigrant workers desperate for a job. They make them pay for $2000+ worth of training to obtain the job, which leaves them already in debt to the companies and loan sharks. They are working 7 days a week for 9-12 months a year, for a breakdown of $2/hr. The companies also basically hold the workers hostage by keeping their passports from them. Our friends tried talking to management and writing the company, but of course were ignored. The cruise ship companies get away with all of this from loopholes in maritime laws. So, all of this with the fact that weve been seeing more and more promotion for vegan cruises leaves us wondering if the people taking these cruises know about how these workers are being treated while theyre supposedly learning about compassion and enriching their lives. There doesnt seem to be a lot of big stories on this, so maybe there can be more attention brought to it, at least in the vegan community, since the vegan cruise is becoming more of a popular thing.
